ABOUT US:
Approximately 24,000 American teenagers in foster care turn 18 years old each year. At this age, they are expected to move out and start their lives on their own. Many still in high school, these teens find themselves in need of jobs, a place to live, and a means of transportation to survive. Without the love and support of a family to fall back on, many teens who aged out of foster care find themselves struggling to succeed on their own.
Machiah’s House makes the plight of “aging out” youth a priority and works to change how these young people are viewed and supported through their journey into adulthood after being in foster care.
We believe it is important for young people to have a voice, particularly as it relates to their own futures. To that end, we encourage the development of youth-led groups in our programs to act as a collective voice to advocate for their needs.
Our group home offers a highly structured environment that supports positive influences and discourages negative distractions. Home-based services provide a therapeutic setting where educational, clinical, recreational, and daily living activities are designed to provide professional guidance, promote positive choices, and motivate personal growth.
Our staff, Social Work interns, mentors and volunteers will support residents as they secure the resources they need to move toward successful independent living, as well as, works to ensure emotional stability, and life-skills through a holistic approach, while encouraging services that provide independence and stability.
Machiah’s House, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization to oversee this effort.
